Fabienne Delsol - On My Mind - New Album out in September

Fabienne Delsol is back with her third and best album on October 4th, ‘On My Mind’ The very welcome return of Fabienne Delsol with her 3rd solo album, a follow up to 2007′s “Between You And Me.” Originally from Limoges in France, Fabienne was formerly the lead singer of legendary London garage band The Bristols and has been living and working in London with husband Liam Watson (Toe Rag Studios) since 1996. Put together in studio down-time and ably backed by Toe Rag’s stable of musicians,“On My Mind” features Fabienne’s customary mixture of both English and French lyrics sung with plenty of coquettish charm. With songs and production so authentically 60′s they could have been taken from tapes gathering dust in Serge Gainsbourg’s garage for the last 40 years. The album marks something of a departure from the jaunty beat-pop and ye-ye of her previous albums however, there’s a definite autumnal feel to several of the tracks, putting you in mind of what the much mooted Francoise Hardy/Nick Drake collaboration might have yielded. Lyrically the bulk of the album deals with the melancholic side of love and has a slightly trippy and introspective edge. Most notably on “Strange Shadows” and the title track “On my Mind” with its phased drums and “Strawberry Fields” style moog motifs. You’re unlikely to hear a better record this autumn!...

HOLLY GOLIGHTLY AND THE BROKEOFFS - NEW ALBUM IN THE SHOPS MONDAY

Yes it’s a long awaited new album from Holly and Dave and it’s called ‘Medicine County’, in the shops from Monday March the 29th. ‘Medicine County’ was written and recorded on a farmhouse just outside Athens in Georgia and as Holly says it’s “peppier” than the last album, in fact there’s only one slow song on the whole album which is probably down to the fact that this time they had a lot longer to work on the songs and recording, their last album was recorded in the middle of a very long European tour over a week or two in Spain. So what does it sound like? Choc-full of ghostly blues, gut-bucket slide guitar, with a smattering of ol’ time country. This is just the disc for conjuring up the spirit of weird old America. Anyone with an interest or liking for the music of The Band, Son House, or Hank Williams, sung by Nancy and Lee, should certainly check it out! Holly’s mum, Carol Voss, painted the cover, which adds to the warm home-spun appeal. 12 brand new songs including a cover of Wreckless Eric’s ‘Murder In My Mind’ and a guest appearance by Tom Heinl on ‘Blood On The Saddle’ (Tom wrote Holly’s Christmas track ‘Christmas Tree On Fire’) BUY IT HERE...

Billy Childish on Radio 4

Radio 4 recognition at last for Mr Childish. Billy was featured on a Radio 4 documentary earlier this week. You can listen on the BBC i-player for the next few days. Here’s what it’s all about… John Wilson meets a prolific and unique British artist. For someone who professes that ‘art can achieve nothing’ and who claims to detest hard work, Billy Childish has been an artist of extraordinary industry and influence. In 30 years of activity he has written 40 collections of poetry, recorded more than 120 albums and painted 5,000 pictures. He has founded art movements, created self styled non-art movements and been credited by Tracey Emin as her greatest influence. Peter Doig calls him ‘one of the most outstanding, and often misunderstood, figures on the British art scene’. But despite all the output, acclaim and influence, Billy Childish remains a total outsider. His punk rock band recently did a session for Marc Riley’s programme on BBC 6Music. ‘I can’t believe this is only the second session that you’ve done in 30 years’, said Marc, ‘why is that?’ ‘Because nobody will bloody touch me’ said the charmingly polite Childish with a bemused smile. Now the ICA in London has given its three galleries over to Billy’s work, the first time a mainstream gallery has ever opened its doors to him. John Wilson speaks to artists, musicians and poets about his work and in a long interview at Billy’s Kent home, he discovers why Billy thinks his work upsets and enthralls people in roughly equal measure and why this artistic, eccentric, mustachioed, tea-drinking poet regards himself as totally un-English....

Billy Childish exhibition at the ICA (from Feb 17 to April 18)

Yes Billy has a big proper exhibition at the ICA…It started on Wednesday and runs until April 18th. Here’s what the ICA have to say:- Artist, musician and writer Billy Childish is a cult figure, and one who has gained an international following, but this is the first time a public institution has brought together a major solo exhibition to encompass his extraordinary career. His prodigious range of activities can best be understood as a total work of art – one which centres on his own persona. Unknowable but Certain presents the vitality of his recent work as a culmination of over three decades’ engagement across different media. The lower gallery features a group of Childish’s recent paintings, which have an unusual command and power. It includes self-portraits, often shown hill-walking; images of boats on the Medway, the estuary where he lives; still lifes with flowers, featuring pots made by the artist’s mother; and paintings depicting the Swiss modernist writer Robert Walser, including works based on police photographs showing the author dead in the snow. Childish’s paintings are highly expressionistic, conveying a sense of the visionary significance that he discovers in objects, places and people. They also demonstrate the deliberate rejection of the contemporary world that is a feature of all his work. Our upper galleries present Childish’s output as a musician and writer, covering a career which began in 1977 and providing a context within which the recent paintings can be understood. One room concentrates on his music, which has involved a huge range of collaborators and bands and which maintains a stubbornly independent ethos originating in the punk era. The second room features books and pamphlets containing Childish’s writings, often designed and published by him and illustrated by his own woodcuts. The display includes polemical and campaigning literature, but also his more personal poetry and prose, much of which is profoundly autobiographical in nature. The exhibition has been curated by Richard Birkett and Matthew Higgs, and is staged concurrently with an exhibition of the artist’s paintings at White Columns in New York (March 5—April 17)....

VERMIN POETS - DEBUT ALBUM

Coming out on the 15th of March is the debut album from The Vermin Poets who are Neil Palmer on Guitar/Lyre/vox Billy Childish on Bass/Backing Vox, JuJu Claudius on drums/Backing Vox and Wolf Howard on Drums but don’t think this is just another Billy Childish band ‘cos it’s not….MYSPACE We are vermin — V…E…ERMIN The Vermin Poets are the self-discovered heirs to a long line of bards and natural philosophers whose number includes Reg Presley, Sky Saxon, Bo Diddley, D.H Laurence, William Shakespeare, Aristotle, Homer, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and all the unnamed carriers of legend and myth. In raising their songwriting art, the legendary punk rocker William Chyldish and Fire Dept front man Neil Hereward Palmer engaged in an alliance to pursue the thrice-fold aims of Happiness, Poetry and God. They succeed in manifesting the authentic sound of amateurism, elevating it to high art and thus banishing procrastination and the fear of creation from the human imagination. However, mindful that poets are, in the main, vermin Chyldish and Palmer cheerfully mock their own craft, praising limitation. For in unceasingly veiling God’s truth, which is the way to things, with words, the Vermin Poet separates persons-with-an-interest from the wider interests of human beings outside commerce and held in God’s law, which is love. Dr Johnson was none too keen on vermin poets: his English dictionary of 1755 contained a definition of the word “vaticide”, which is “a murderer of poets”. The Vermin Poets seek neither to gild the ars poetica, nor to slay its sons and daughters. The stated aim of The Vermin Poets is to describe the shape of the things sufficiently well so that others to may understand and explore, or view more effectivly the universe and the bounty it contains for themselves....
